A group of our pupils recently visited Beamish Museum to record this year’s annual Remembrance broadcast. The museum’s carefully preserved buildings and streets gave them a powerful and authentic setting in which to reflect on the past.
As part of the film, students from Macmillan Academy, joined by pupils to create a drama piece. Together they recreated a story reflecting on family life during wartime, and on the often heartbreaking news that families at home received from the front line.
By using drama in this way, we hope our young people can deepen their understanding of what life may have been like for families during wartime. It also gives them a meaningful way to reflect on and remember all those who have lost their lives in war and conflict, both in historic wars and in more recent conflicts around the world.
The broadcast forms part of our PSHE programme, which helps students explore important themes of history, citizenship and remembrance.
The full programme will be shown as part of of Remembrance celebrations and watched by all staff and students across the school It will conclude with a minute’s silence, observed at the same time across every school in Endeavour Academies Trust as we come together to remember.
We would like to thank Beamish Museum for kindly hosting us and making this project possible. A special thank you goes to all the students and staff involved, who approached this project with great care, sensitivity and respect.
We will remember them.
