On Friday 7th June Y1 visited Kirkleatham Owl Centre.

There was lots to see and do in a packed day. In the morning they spent time looking at all the different birds, including owls, pelicans, kookaburras and even a talking parrot!

They found out information about different animals, and took turns stroking various animals including a bearded dragon, a six-week-old tawny owl, a white faced owl and a tenrec.

They then helped to feed the meerkats and porcupines. Some of the meerkats were only a few weeks old. After lunch the children enjoyed feeding the chickens and then watched a fantastic flying display which included owls and pelicans.

This visit enhanced work the children had been doing as part of the paws, claws and whiskers topic earlier in the year and complemented work in their reading lessons where they have been working from the book Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett.
